Nancy J. Szabo

Dr. Szabo received a Ph.D. in Analytical Chemistry from the University of Florida in 1995 for application oriented studies using surface-enhanced Raman spectrometry (SERS) with commercially available substrates.  She was a post-doctoral fellow at the Pesticide Residue Laboratory at the University of Florida from 1993-1995, where she developed and evaluated analytical methodology for the determination of organophosphate pesticides applied to minor crops.  In a joint position between the Food and Environmental Toxicology Laboratory at the University of Florida and the Florida Department of Environmental Protection Mercury Program in Tallahassee, Florida, from 1995-1998, she studied the effects of nutrient status on algal profiles from Everglades National Park and consequent effects on the formation of methyl mercury from available inorganic mercury.  Dr. Szabo currently serves as director for the Analytical Toxicology Core Laboratory at the University of Florida Center for Environmental and Human Toxicology. Her research focuses on the analysis of toxic or potentially toxic components (pesticides, drugs, metals, etc.) in environmental and biological samples, the development of new methods of analysis, and the modification of traditional techniques to low level analysis and/or to complex ‘field-type’ matrices.
